Designed for a young family, this large elaborate residence and guest house occupies a very prominent site at the top of San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood. The site offers spectacular sweeping views from the Presidio and Golden Gate Bridge all the way around San Francisco Bay to downtown.
At about 60 by 220 feet, it is quite generous for a residence by San Francisco’s standard of densely packed small lots. One of the challenges of the site however was that in order to take advantage of the views the living levels would need to begin some forty feet above the street level on Broadway. Because the lot goes all the way through the block from Broadway to Pacific we were able to generate a scheme that enters on grade at Pacific and proceeds through a gracious sequence of gardens and courtyards to the magnificent views on the north side of the property. The rooms of the main house are organized around a central courtyard that provides a private urban garden refuge and floods the house with natural light – a rarity for most San Francisco homes.
